Dwarf Hamsters

Perhaps you were considering a Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster or two as a companion pet...

Here are a some things you should know:

Hammies can be a little cranky if you wake them up... give them a few minutes to become fully awake before you handle them...

Hamsters store some of their food for a snack later on... Empty the bowl daily and fill with fresh food in addition to a little fresh fruit or veggie treat. Hamsters teeth grow continuously, an occasional dog biscuit or hamster-specific chew stick purchased in pet supply stores keep teeth worn down.

A sand bath is an important part of a hamsters grooming routine.  The sand absorbs extra oils in the hammies fur leaving him soft and fresh! They love to roll and wrestle in it. A good quality, low dust Chinchilla sand is best,(we like "Charlie Chinchilla").

A "must have" for all hamsters is a wheel. They run an average of 8 miles per night! A solid-surface plastic wheel is the safest. Little feet can get caught in other kinds and injuries can occur. Take the wheel out when cleaning the cage a run under hot water to remove dirt and oils that accumulate.

A "critter trail" type cage or 10 gallon aquarium with fitted screen is sufficient housing for 2 dwarf hamsters. Bedding should be Aspen or recycled paper, such as "Carefresh". Never use pine or cedar bedding as these can cause respiratory ailments in small animals.

Many types of hamsters are available for adoption. Check out www.petfinder.com
